WATER RECYCLING

recycling wash water Water recycling from the washing machine was done by cutting a hole in our laundry room and running the drain hose out to a 35 gallon trash barrel. We put a drain plug with a garden hose attached to the trash barrel. The water is used to water the four trees in the back yard. I cut a piece of sheet metal and bent the sides down for a cover so water would not run into the laundry room. Then the top of the sheet metal was caulked.

The water from the dishes and the rinse water is also used as supplemental watering between running the washing machine. It's pretty low tech. I take the tubs of water outside and pour it on the trees.

When I change out the dogs' water bowls I empty the old water on the trees as well. It takes a couple of extra minutes a day, but we feel it is worth it.
