Sonoran Desert Toad

Sonoran Desert Toad This Sonoran Desert Toad was found in our yard under a board. It is about 5 inches in length not including the legs. They are the largest toads in the Sonoran Desert.

They are nocturnal in the summer months arriving in the the desert from May through September during monsoons. They eat insects and other small frogs. They can live more than 10 years and are usually 5-7 inches in length.

They have several glands which emit toxins through their skin. They can kill a large dog if the dog picks it up with their mouth or licks it. Watch for excess salivating, pawing at the mouth or staggering. Wash the dogs mouth out with a hose and take to the vet.
