OFFGRID HOUSE CLEANING
MEETING THE CHALLENGE

Offgrid house cleaning is a challenge to say the least. If your offgrid home is at ground level, expect the ground to be in your house. The settlers were smart, they had dirt floors. It preserved their sanity.

You can sweep it, dust mop it, mop and wash it. Within a couple of hours it won't look like you did a thing. Desert dirt is very fine powder. A vacuum cleaner (18 amps not worth using) just blows the dirt into the air.

Sweeping with a broom causes cloud formations that fly up your nose and chokes you when you breathe. Then it settles somewhere else. So mopping should be the answer only now you have created mud. Be prepared to change the water in your bucket numerous times which does not help with water conservation.

Open your windows for a nice breeze. It is a relief from the heat of the summer. But the dirt that comes with it is not. Screens do not help stop the unseen particles moving in and making themselves comfortable. When they land you cannot figure out how that much dirt accumulated in such a short period of time.

If you have dogs with paws, the dirt will be tracked in four fold. Dirt and dog hair are a constant eye sore in every corner.

If you have neighbors with feet, a trail of dirt will surely follow. Neighbors visiting is a welcome and wonderful break from offgrid life. But, you cannot ask them to take their shoes off at the door. They will not be able to get them back on when they leave due to the inch of dirt and dog hair they have acquired on their socks during their visit. Some of this dirt they brought with them so they can take it when they leave. Most of it was from previous visitors and your four dogs so it really should stay.

If you are picky about cleaning house, expect to do nothing else.

What to do? Wipe off the dining room table and floor just before you eat. Have a clean bath mat to step out of the shower. Decorate with lots of plants because that will be what people notice. Let your dogs in and out as many times as they want. Invite your neighbors over and don't apologize for the mess. You work hard and they know it.

Do your best, but don't miss out on life.

This is offgrid desert living.
