OFFGRID DOGS KENNEL - MATERIALS USED
On September 19, 2007 I built an offgrid dogs kennel. The doggie door for our pugs was useless as it was too dangerous for them to be out any where by themselves.
The materials used were all left over from other projects. It started with a wooden pallet that we get for free from local businesses. Left over hard board siding which is already primed was cut and nailed to the pallet.
To make the frame more sturdy, 1 x 2's were nailed together to make 2 x 2's for the frame much like the porch.
A 1 x 2 was attached to the doorway to make a ledge. Then seven 1 x 2's, 36" long were cut for the roof rafters and nailed in place.
There was a small door left over from a closet that we had cut down with the hinges already attached. The hinges were screwed into the right side. Ensuring there was a tight fit, 1 x 4's were nailed to frame it.
The offgrid dogs kennel sits about 6" off the ground. The kennel measures 36" X 48".
This area is large enough for two pugs to get outside when no one is there to let them out. The space between the floor and the house was sealed with strips of wood and caulking.
Half inch hard cloth (a welded wire mesh) was stapled to the outside of the kennel.
The hard cloth extends 4 inches out so that it can be buried. It was also stapled to the storage shed to help prevent critters from getting in between.
On the inside I stapled metal window screening to keep out the bees, bugs and small snakes. The screening goes all the way around.
This was all done with and Bostich air compressor and pneumatic air guns which included nail and staple guns, a compound miter saw and our gas generator.
These are my air guns which I use for most of my projects. My hands get way too tired to finish any job. I tried to use wood screws on the kennel, but the wood was spliting.
The roof was made from left over hard board from the storage shed. Two pieces were used andthe seam was caulked to seal.
I put a fake christmas tree in the kennel for encouragement. My pugs are less than enthused with this set up since our other two dogs are out. But, they get to be out in the fresh air. I am able to hose down the kennel.
