- PULL
- Spend entire days working
- Live in harsh conditions without human
coddling or creature comforts
- Companionship

Included in the Sled group are:
- Alaskan Malamute
- Samoyed
- Siberian Husky
Included in the Draft group are:
- Bernese Mountain Dog
- Greater Swiss Mountain Dog
- Newfoundland
- St. Bernard

Characteristics:
- Very energetic; rugged
- Fast learners; problem solvers
- Strong willed; can be stubborn
- Independent; can be aloof

Potential Issues:
- Strong hunting instinct-CATS BEWARE
- Roaming and leash issues
- Obedience challenges-requires firmness,
patience and consistency
- Howling, barking Note: ALL DOGS BARK
- Housetraining challenges
- Digging (to cool off)
- Possible dog fights
- Shedding
PERSONAL PROTECTION

- Work under the direction of people
- Protect property and territory
- Companionship

- Boxer
- Doberman
- German Shepherd
- Giant Schnauzer
- Standard Schnauzer
Included in the Draft group are:
Characteristics:
- Energetic, athletic
- Alert and courageous; PROTECTIVE
- Loyal to family
- Strong willed; intelligent

Potential Issues:
- Obedience challenges; require structured
training and firm leadership
- Not for the faint of heart
- Dominance challenges; territorial aggression,
dog fights
- May play rough with small children
(but good when socialized)
- Wary of strangers
GUARD DOGS

- Protect territory, property and livestock
without direction from people
- Companionship

Included in this group are:
- Akita
- Bullmastiff
- Mastiff
- Rottweiller
- German Shepherd
- Great Pyrenees
Included in the Draft group are:
Characteristics:
- Energetic
- Alert and courageous
- Independent; aloof
- Strong willed; can be stubborn
- Calm and dignified with socialization

Potential Issues:
- Obedience challenges; require structured
training and firm leadership
- Dog fights
- Dominance challenges; territorial possessive
- Rarely good with young children unless very well
socialized and integrated into family pack
- Suspicious of strangers
