Diamond back rattlesnakes mid-May through the hot summer months in Arizona off grid, are very active as night preditors. They will seek refuse during the hot days and hunt starting early evening to dawn.
Rattlesnakes will seek refuse (the same as we do off grid), but under your porch, rocks, borrows other animals have dug. Rattlesnakes do not dig borrows themselves. They find places to hide left behind by other animals including humans. We are probably the worst offenders of junk. We like to keep things. Get rid of any wood piles, those innocent wheel barrows turned upside down, any accumulation of debri.
Diamond back rattlesnakes are a venomous pit vipor. Rattlesnakes have a heat sensing organ. They will not attack prey that is larger than they can swallow. However, they will attack if they feel threaten. If they are under your porch and start to come out and you or your pet happens to be there they will attack. Rattlesnakes are aggressive. They do not always give a warning with their rattle. If you have been lucky enough not to come across a rattlesnake, good. But, make no mistake, diamond back rattlesnakes are there off grid and on grid.
Diamond back rattlesnakes do blend in to fit into their environment. Rattlesnakes have a second set of fangs if they lose them in a victim, they can still attack. They grow on average to about 4 feet long, but can get to be 6 feet long.
The baby rattlesnakes seek any area to hide since they are left at birth. They are born with full venom and fangs. They can fit in very small areas.
If you have pets, take them to snake aversion classes. Pets are very curious. Your pet does not know that a rattle is the warning sound. Your pet cannot tell you when or where he/she was bitten. Your pet cannot tell you how much pain they are in from a rattlesnake bite.
Put 1/4 inch hard cloth(a metal square wire) on areas that rattlesnakes can get under, bury the cloth 6 inches underground. The fencing should be a minimum of 2 ft high although rattlesnakes can easily climb this, 4 ft. is better. If you have a garden take care that rabbits and rodents do not have access, this is a food source for rattlesnakes. If there is no perceived food source, it will help to deter them away from your home.
Recognize the signs of a rattlesnake bite in your pet. Some can be a swollen area, vomiting, loss of control of bowels and urine, weaving, disoriented, lethergy and comatose. Have an emergency plan mapped out, where your emergency services are located and the times and days they are open. They may not always be available or they may be too far away to save your pets life, in which case you may be faced with watching your pet die.
After you have done everything you can, you pray for the best.
